For background information, please read The Playground Files.

This list of South Island Fenced Playgrounds and Partially Fenced Playgrounds is organised alphabetically by local council, and then alphabetically by local town, and then alphabetically by playground name/location. Christchurch Fenced Playgrounds and Partially Fenced Playgrounds are not included because they’re listed on their own page. Where possible, I have included comments from the parent or parents who nominated the playground.

If you have any photos of the playgrounds mentioned below please send them to us! And please let us know if we’ve missed any Fenced Playgrounds or Partially Fenced Playgrounds that should be included on this list.

Central Otago District Council

King George V Memorial Park playground

Till Street, Roxburgh

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “There’s a fenced playground in Roxburgh (Otago). Which is a great wee place to stop if you’re driving between Dunedin and Queenstown!”

Clutha District Council

Christie Street playground

Christie Street, Balclutha

Date added: 25/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Partially fenced with just the back corner, which goes on to a neighbouring property and the small roadside/only entrance unfenced. Best for primary school aged kids (my 3 year old find it too challenging), but there’s a large amount of grass that’s great for kicking a ball around, etc. On a quiet street so fairly safe. A couple of nice big trees for shade.”

Stirling Playground

Baker Street, Balclutha

Date added: 23/01/17

Fenced playground.

Parent’s comment: “Well worth the wee detour from the State Highway, and great for toddlers too.”

Victoria Park playground

St Albans Street, Kaitangata

Date added: 23/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Fenced playground, by the pool.”

Kaka Point playground

The Esplanade, Kaka Point

Date added: 23/02/17

Parent’s comment: “Fenced with latched gate at the road side. The only part unfenced is the back edge which is pretty impenetrable because of the amazing garden/hill. Equipment is a little run down but our four kids (aged from 1 to 6 years old) all found something to play on. Lots of seating too.”

Dunedin City Council

Memorial Park playground

10 Hartstonge Avenue, Mosgiel (off Gordon Road)

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Awesome fenced playground – we go there every time we visit.”

Grey District Council

Dixon Park playground

Turumaha Street, Greymouth

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Greymouth’s Dixon Park has a fenced playground for under 5s. Part of the larger playground which is unfenced, but the little kid’s part is completely fenced.”

Invercargill City Council

Otatara Community Church Playground

46 Oreti Road, Otatara, Invercargill

Date added: 22/01/17

Fenced playground.

Parent’s comment: “We use it a lot – not our church but the playground appears to be for anyone to use. The sign on the playground is ‘Otatara Community Playground’, so it seems to be intended for everybody!”

Marlborough District Council

Pollard Park playground

Parker Street, Blenheim

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Great fenced playground for under 2s.”

Redwoodtown Plunket Rooms playground

21 Bythell Street, Redwoodtown, Blenheim

Date added: 23/01/17

Fenced playground.

Parent’s comment: “It’s our favourite!”

Nelson City Council

Richmond Plunket Rooms playground

56 Oxford St, Richmond, Nelson

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Richmond Plunket rooms in Tasman have a great fenced playground. You don’t have to be with Plunket to use them. There is a bigger playground right next door that isn’t fenced but good to keep the older kids amused while the little ones play.”

Queenstown Lakes District Council

Dinosaur Park

100 Ardmore Street, Wanaka

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Only partially fenced along the park by the stream but the rest facing the lake front is not. My parents lost my 2 year old there recently and someone told them he’d gone to the wharf on the lake to feed the ducks!!!”

Southland District Council

Winton Plunket Rooms playground

394 Great N. Road, Winton

Date added: 23/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Outdoor fully fenced playground by the Plunket Rooms. Available any time, and really good!”

Waimakariri District Council

Oakwood Park playground

Oakwood Drive, Rangiora

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Has a fenced section for young kids which has swings, slide, sandpit and other age appropriate things. Also has more equipment like balance boards, swings and a climbing frame for older kids plus a massive field with rugby posts. My go to park with my 5 kids as there is something for everyone.”

Westland District Council

Cass Square playground

Weld Street, Hokitika

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Hokitika’s Cass Square playground is partially fenced. The unfenced part is the rugby field side so still pretty safe.”
