For background information, please read The Playground Files.

This list of North Island Partially Fenced Playgrounds is organised alphabetically by local council,  and then alphabetically by playground name/location. Auckland and Wellington Partially Fenced Playgrounds are not included, as they have their own pages. Where possible, I have included comments from the parent or parents who nominated the playground.

I have no photos of these playgrounds! If you have any photos of the playgrounds mentioned below and would be happy for me to use them, please send them to me. And please contact me if I have missed a Partially Fenced Playground, or if you feel that the information below is inaccurate in any way.

Far North District Council

Paihia Beach playground

Marsden Road, by David Crescent, Paihia

Date added: 22/01/17

Parents’ comments:

“Fenced to the road but open to the ocean.”

“We had three sets of twins living walking distance to this playground (the only one in town). Was top of our conversation list for the first few years. All it needs is just one more fence and it would be perfect. Witnessed many little kids leg it to the water while their parents are busy.”

“Those were the days – chasing one twin to the beach while the other legs it around the fence to the busy road because of course my girls always ran in opposite directions! I think they didn’t want to spoil the ocean view with the other fence but really the only people who would be looking through it would be the people inside the playground and they don’t care about a fence because they’re busy playing or loking after little ones. There were many many times our three sets of twins (mine, my sister’s and our friend’s) were playing together and I remember one time when the only kids there were 4 sets of twins!”

“Fenced in three sides and open on the beach”

“A great fenced one – although reading later comments – it’s not fully fenced but just on the road side so there is still beach access and an easy way around for adventurous kids…”

Hamilton City Council

Hamilton Gardens playground

Hungerford Crescent, Hamilton East

Date added: 23/02/17

Parent’s comment: “It’s fenced on every side except the carpark side. I have 4 year old twins and a toddler, I spent the whole time running after them all and stressing about the carpark.”

Manawatu District Council

Manfield Park playground

South Street, Feilding

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Partially fenced, just along the roadside.”

Kiwi Play Safe comment: This is my home town, so we’ve taken our children to this park a few times. The issue is that there is quite a lot of car traffic onto the rest of Manfield, and it goes past the playground, so not having a fence to separate the playground space from the internal car space is a bit of a problem.

New Plymouth District Council

Pukekura Park playground

Fillis Street, Brooklands

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “They spent a small fortune [on it] yet it’s bordered by water there is some fencing but not fully fenced. In my opinion it’s also one of the worst designed playgrounds due to its layout.”

Palmerston North City Council

Memorial Park playground

Main Street, Palmerston North

Date added: 22/01/17

Parent’s comment: “Has a fully fenced paddling pool on one side of the play area and on the other side a rather deep, dirty, large completely unfenced duck pond. I happened to be there when a toddler fell in (not one of mine). Strange rules regarding pool fencing/pond fencing.”

Date added: 23/02/17

Council comment: “Fence separating large drain from park.”

Overdale Park playground
